New
AXEL Internal Lubricant Eliminates Need for External Release Agent
Axel Plastics Research Laboratories, Inc. announces the addition
of INT-40DHT --- a new internal lubricant/processing aid --- to
the MoldWiz product line.
MoldWiz INT-40DHT is an internal lubricant/processing aid which
is specially tailored for PES and other engineering resins processed
at high temperatures (500-700 F). The additive improves release
of parts from mold cavities, increasing melt flow and enhancing
dispersion, as well. In fact, in recent customer evaluations, INT-40DHT
was compared with a number of other similar processing additives
and was selected as the best product for dispersing titanium dioxide.
MoldWiz INT-40DHT is incorporated directly into the resin, eliminating
the need for an external release agent. Available in 100% active
powder or pellet form, the product is easily dry tumbled, gravitationally
fed or compounded into resin. Shorter cycle times, reduced temperatures
and pressures requirements for molding machines, and the elimination
of weld/knit lines on molded parts are other benefits cited.
Since 1941, Axel Plastics Research Laboratories, Inc. has manufactured
hundreds of additives, mold releases, and internal lubricants. There
are resin and application specific internal lubricants, external
release agents, and custom formulations. back

INT-PUL24 Internal Mold Releases Improves Pultrusion Processing
A
new AXEL advanced additive, MoldWiz INT-PUL24, improves pultrusion
processing, optimizing line speed by reducing pull force, while
contributing to minimum die wear. INT-PUL24 yields more consistent,
cleaner profiles yet waste is reduced. Unlike many commodity lubricants,
INT-PUL24 will not interfere with bonding or other secondary processes.
The new, polymeric liquid additive has a pH of 4.5, making it much
less likely to corrode die surfaces, while maintaining excellent
processing values. INT-PUL24 will also reduce the viscosity of resin
baths, making it possible to achieve excellent wetting of fiber
rovings without the addition of excessive amounts of styrene to
increase VOCs.
Recent
Customer Evaluation
A customer indicated
in a recent report that tests with INT-PUL24 were superior to competitive
internal mold releases in pultrusion for fence posts. The customer
reported the pull force required was the lowest with INT-PUL24 and
short beam tests on the pultruded parts were 6800 for competitor
A's product versus 7200 for INT-PUL24. Also, it was reported that
INT-PUL24 achieved the highest value that has ever been attained
using an internal lubricant.
"Overall, our pultrusion customers can improve production,
reduce die wear, and decrease styrene emission by using our new
internal mold release, INT-PUL24, states Glenn Pfister, Senior Technical
Support Engineer. This new product is further evidence of AXEL's
long dedication to providing the finest processing aid additives
to the pultrusion industry."

New
Axel Additive Key to Producing Mar Resistant Laminates
Axel Research
Laboratories has introduced a new additive for laminates that benefits
the product's manufacturer, as well as the retailers that display
the product and the consumers that purchase the product .
The new INT-2EDS eliminates the unsightly surface abrasions commonly
caused by factory personnel in the shipping and handling functions.
"In some cases when laminates are marred everyone in the cycle
from the manufacturer to the ultimate consumer may suffer loss of
a sale because of an unattractive surface" states Glenn Pfister,
Axel Senior Technical Support Engineer. "Especially the dark
solid or multi-colored hues in laminates will not appear at their
intended best. This new formulation to our line of additives helps
to eliminate this difficult problem that results from handling".
MoldWiz internal lubricant #INT-2EDS is incorporated into the resin
with benefits such as; improved resin flow and enhanced wet out,
plus eliminating dry spots and micro-porosity in sheet surfaces.
Also, improved release and better overall cosmetic appearance of
the sheets is a reality. The improved resin flow is also important
when caul plates are utilized to emboss or impart texture to sheet
surfaces. And, because this is an internal lubricant it offers an
important advantage over external releases. It ensures replication
fidelity, which is often lost with external releases that may build
up and require frequent cleaning".
Other advantages
of internal lubricants beyond sheet quality and consistency include;
reduced down time and extended tool life as a result of decreased
wear, tear and labor saved by eliminating the application and removal
of the release agent.
Axel Research Laboratories manufacturers hundreds of additives,
mold releases and internal lubricants. There are resin and application
specific internal lubricants, external release agents and custom
formulations. back to top
New
Improved Internal Lubricants Available In Convenient Pellets Engineered
for Thermoplastics
Now, the benefits of using an internal lubricant are available in
an easy to use, 100% active pellet form - MoldWiz internal lubricant
pellets, manufactured by Axel Plastics Research Laboratories, Woodside,
NY. MoldWiz pellets are available in several resin specific proprietary
formulations and contain no binders or fillers to contaminate the
resin. They are also highly effective at additive rates as low as
0.25% based on resin weight.
Injection molders are sure to appreciate the ease of using these products.
Unlike messy powders, MoldWiz pellets can be conveniently dry tumbled,
gravitationally mixed, or, if desired, can be fed directly at the
throat or with other additives. Compounders will find MoldWiz pellets
an excellent choice for masterbatches, improving the dispersion of
color, fillers and other additives.
In addition to improving release, MoldWiz internal lubricants are
particularly valued for their ability to reduce resin viscosity without
adversely effecting the physical properties of the molded resin. Reduced
viscosity enables better resin flow at lower temperatures and reduces
flow marks and knit lines on molded parts. All of these factors can
contribute significantly to increased productivity. Another benefit
that MoldWiz pellets have over commodity lubricants is that they will
not leave any residue on molded parts and do not require cleaning
before secondary processes. Recently, an AXEL customer reported, "MoldWiz
internal lubricant pellets are the only processing aid additive that
we have found that releases our parts cleanly without interfering
with our plating operation."
"Some injection molders believe that if they don't have a release
problem, they don't need an internal lubricant", says Glenn Pfister,
Senior Technical Support Engineer for AXEL. "What these molders
are missing is the savings that MoldWiz internal lubricant pellets
offer, because these products contribute to faster cycle times and
reduced scrap". back to top
New
Non-Silicone Internal Release Offers Advantages for EPDM, TPO and
Other Elastomers
MoldWiz® INT-52EPR from Axel Laboratories, USA is a proprietary
rubber additive that generally improves flow characteristics and
reduces tack, making it easier to process natural and synthetic
rubbers, particularly EPDM, TPO and elastomeric co-polymers. In
addition, INT-52EPR contributes to easier, cleaner release of cured
parts, reducing or eliminating the application of external release
agents, and lowering the incidence of mold fouling.
Axel reports that cutomer evaluations have demonstrated MoldWiz
INT-52EPR to have no adverse effect on secondary operations, such
as bonding, and no deletrious effect on physical properties of the
cured elastomers, even after prolonged storage. Some users have
reported an increase in elongation and greater tensile strength
when MoldWiz INT-52EPR was used in various rubber recipes.
"For our customers, the ability of INT-52EPR to improve release
can translate into important labor savings because cleaner molding
minimizes downtime necessitated by mold cleaning. This production
efficiency is essential to our rubber molders and processors",
says Glenn Pfister, Senior Technical Support Engineer for Axel.

XTEND
Semi-Permanent Mold Releases from Axel: New Technology That Dramatically
Improves Mold Release Operations for Plastics/Rubber Processor
After
comprehensive R&D and field testing, Axel introduces XTEND semi-permanent
mold releases. This new advanced line of releases is engineered
to enhance release performance in the most demanding applications.
The types of applications include fiberglass composites for recreational
products, helmets, ski's, boats, RTM for auto products, epoxy for
aircraft components, rubber hoses and gaskets, as well as a multitude
of other plastic and rubber products.
XTEND release proprietary chemistry is available in water and solvent-based
formulations, offering processors options for all types of resins
and rubber, and for all types of molding operations occurring at
temperatures ranging from ambient to 1000°F (538°C). XTEND
semi-permanent releases are reactive resin solutions designed to
cross-link and cure on the mold, providing an inert and durable
release surface which does not transfer to the molded part.
According to Mr. Glenn Pfister, Axel Senior Technical Support Engineer,
"Customers always want more productivity and economy from mold
releases. When we developed the XTEND line, we aimed not only to
fill this demand, but to offer semi-permanent releases that are
easier to apply, environmental friendly as well as more pleasant
to use. For example, the XTEND product specially for open molding
is all of these. Axel has always been concerned with each customer's
specific needs, and that's why there are XTEND semi-permanent releases
for molders of fiberglass boats as well as rubber gaskets."
Axel has pioneered the development of advanced mold releases, processing
aid additives and cleaners and sealers for the plastic and rubber
industries, for more than 55 years. back to top
New
MoldWiz Series EM-1212 for Rubber Processors Yield Multiple Releases
Without Mold Cleaning
EM-1212 a new water based non-silicone external release agent for
rubber that dries at room temperature and does not cause blistering
or surface lines on parts is now available from Axel Plastics Research
Laboratories Inc.
"Our proprietary selective adhesive prevents the film from
easily being torn off by the demolded part resulting in numerous
demoldings per application" according to Glenn Pfister, Senior
Technical Support Engineer. "And the beauty of this external
release agent is that it does not interfere with the secondary operations
such as; decorating, bonding or painting -- aspects important to
many manufacturers today.
The benefits of EM-1212 flow directly from the product's composition
which forms a mono-molecular film that adheres by absorption to
the mold walls and has no affinity for the rubber. The fluoropolymers
provide excellent heat resistance with minimal transfer of the release
to the final product, "a Teflon like release action".
Multiple releases from a single application can contribute to reduced
manufacturing costs and enhanced mold maintenance. The small fraction
of alcohol provides a quick-drying formula which is also non-flammable.
And the overall composition is much more environmentally friendly
than solvent-based external mold releases, making it easier and
more pleasant for employees to work with.
Spraying is the preferred method of applying EM-1212 because it
results in a more consistent release film. But it may also be applied
by wiping the product on the hot or cold molds. The release may
be used full strength or diluted with water or water/alcohol as
required to achieve the optimum desired amount for processing. back

A
new XTEND release W7200 yields a semi-permanent aqueous emulsion
external release agent which forms a uniform cured film on drying.
This selective adhesion on the mold surface prevents the film from
being torn or ripped off by the de-molded part.
A
Case History:
A manufacturer centrifugally casts a highly filled polyester resin
to produce 4-8" diameter piping for various infra-structure
applications. The resin mix containing 33% resin, 67% calcium carbonate
and 25% glass fiber is cast in multi-position, carousel type steel
mold and processed at 240°F/115°C for 20 minutes. XTEND
W-7200 was evaluated against two competitive semi-permanent mold
releases. Neither of the competitors was capable of providing multiple
release. XTEND W-7200 provided 5 easy releases and was judged capable
of providing more. Significant savings were attributed to XTEND
W-7200 as a result of this economy.

19SAM A New Semi-Permanent for Solid Surface Production
XTEND 19SAM, a new semi-permanent mold
release from AXEL, was developed specifically for cast polymer and
solid surface production. The reactive resin solution crosslinks
and cures on the mold surface, offering a durable release coating
which withstands the abrasion of highly filled resins, and the rigors
of solid surface processing. According to Nancy Teufel, Technical
Support Manager for AXEL, "XTEND 19SAM was also specially formulated
to afford the high chemical resistance and enhanced slip that non-gel-coated
applications require." XTEND 19SAM is a low viscosity liquid
that is easily applied by spraying (using HVLP equipment) or by
wiping on molds. The semi-permanent release cures quickly at ambient
temperature and requires no polishing to achieve good cosmetic surfaces.
The release is suitable for all types of molds (including, FRP,
glass, epoxy, steel, aluminum and plating surfaces) and requires
no sealer.
"Our customers are raving about the results that they are seeing
with this new release", says Teufel, citing successes in both
polyester and acrylate resin systems. "As a matter of fact,"
she says, "this release has even succeeded in polymer concrete
applications where nothing else has worked. We have one customer
who molds underground storage boxes with almost no draft. In the
past, de-molding parts was extremely difficult even with re-application
of mold release after each part. Since converting to XTEND 19SAM,
this customer routinely molds 15-20 parts after application of only
two coats of release, and in some cases has been able to achieve
30-40 de-moldings." back to top
New
Internal Mould Release for Pultrusion From AXEL, USA - Designed
Specifically for Resin Containing Low Profile Additive
AXEL Plastics Research Laboratories Inc., USA has just developed
a new internal mould release for pultrusion, MoldWiz INT-PUL315LPA.
The product is designed specifically for polyester or vinyl ester
resin systems that contain polyvinyl acetate as a (LPA) low profile
additive. Glenn Pfister, the company's Senior Technical Support
Representative, reports that when most internal lubricants are added
to the resin along with LPA there is a tendency for the LPA to phase
out. " This separation can be quite dramatic," says Pfister, "causing
the LPA to form a rubbery ball or mass which is impossible to reincorporate
by mixing. This does not occur when INT-PUL315LPA is used, in fact,
during the first trials conducted, our customer actually reported
a reduction in the viscosity of the resin/ LPA mix when the release
was added, and they believe that this will improve their line speeds."
MoldWiz INT-PUL315LPA is a proprietary complex mixture of organic
phosphate esters, amines and hydrocarbon carriers. The customary
addition level is 1% based on weight. All AXEL products are formulated
from raw materials that comply with the chemical substance inventory
list of TOSCA, DSL, MITI, EINECS, Australia and Korea. back

EM-303SF2 Water-based Mold Release Replaces Solvent-based for Nitrile
and Neoprene Molding.
A manufacturer who compression moulds nitrile and neoprene consumer
goods reports that they have successfully replaced a solvent-based
mold release at their west coast facility with an environmentally
friendly water-based product MoldWiz EM-303SF2 from Axel Research
Laboratories, Inc. Woodside, NY, USA. MoldWiz EM-303SF2 has anti-
rusting properties and dries at room temperature. This new release
is ideally suited to hot molding operations and can be applied by
spraying or wiping onto the mold. The MoldWiz forms a monomolecular
film on the walls of the mold and does not transfer to the molded
product. The manufacture reports numerous demoldings are possible
per release application without the necessity of washing or cleaning
the mold. MoldWiz EM-303SF2 is a proprietary emulsion of fatty acids,
phosphate esters and fluoropolymers that contains 3% solids and
no silicone. This assures trouble free secondary processing, including
bonding, decorating, printing etc. According to Glenn Pfister, Axel
Senior Technical Support, "MoldWiz proprietary formulations are
designed and tested to be product and application specific and can
effectively release and enhance a product's appearance as well as
eliminate excessive mold cleaning, and wear and tear on equipment
whenever possible." He concluded, "We always work with our customers'
to develop an appropriate mold release if we don't have one that
is readily available and suitable for the specific application."

New
Guide to Additives and Internal Lubricants for Thermoplastics Available
from Axel Plastics Research Laboratories, Inc.
A new four page brochure to assist injection molding, thermoforming,
rotomolding, compounding and extrusion operations select from mold
releases and lubricants in powder and pellet, liquids and dispersion
aids is now available from Axel, Plastics Research Laboratories,
Woodside New York, USA. This brochure was designed to serve as a
quick reference guide that matches the Axel internal lubricants,
processing aid or dispersion aid to the thermoplastic material that
is to be processed. According to Ms. Nancy Teufel, Senior Marketing
Technical Support, "With the multitude of mold releases and process
aid additives available from Axel, we wanted to give customers a
quick and easy to read horizontal format - - to review and to select
the product -- for their specific application. Axel manufactures
more than 600 different products and also does custom mold release
engineering for an application when requested. This guide compiles
approximately 40 of the most popular requested Axel mold releases
and process aid additives with a wide array of thermoplastic materials."
On the cover,
the brochure features some of the commonly manufactured thermoplastic
products such as; a computer keyboard, nylon screws, a garbage container,
a cellular phone, an automotive dashboard and a colander. On page
three is a frequently asked questions section that covers: how the
MoldWiz works; the compounding of Axel MoldWiz into resins; proper
loading levels of additives used; and the improvement in clarity
of color when using internal lubricants. back

New
Process Additive from AXEL, USA - MoldWiz INT-38HM Will Not Melt
In Dryer.
MoldWiz INT-38HM is a new process additive designed to improve cavity
fill and mold release for nylon and other engineering grade resins
which are dried at temperatures up to 235ƒF/ 114ƒC. According to
Glenn Pfister, Senior Technical Support Representative, " This new
formulation is a direct result of customer feedback. INT-38H is
an established product of AXEL that has long been praised for flow
enhancement and part release, but our customers sometimes found
it difficult to use this additive when drying resin. Our new INT-38HM
has a drop melt of 252ƒF/122ƒC, so now our customers can now blend
the lubricant and resin prior to drying with no fear of melt out."
Typical addition level for INT-38HM is 0.3% based on resin weight.
The proprietary formulation contains modified fatty acids that conform
to 21 CFR 175.300, making the additive suitable for use in plastics
that come in contact with food. INT-38HM is available as a 100%
active pellet or free flowing powder. back

Advanced
Internal lubricant MoldWiz INT-VP250 improves resin flow and dispersion
of additives without weld/knit lines on auto panels.
Automotive, truck manufacturers, and other vinyl plastic makers
of textured panels can now utilize MoldWiz INT-VP250 from Axel Plastics
Research Laboratories, Inc. MoldWiz INT-VP250 avoids excess buildup
in the textured mould detail area that often occurs with ordinary
external releases agents. It does not exude like stearate often
the cause of uneven and splotchy surface areas. With MoldWiz INT-VP250,
cycle times are also reduced along with mould temperature and pressure
in the mould equipment. "MoldWiz users also have the added benefit,"
according to Mr. Glenn Pfister, senior technical support engineer,
of INT-VP250 as an internal lubricant that does not adversely effect
the physical properties or any of the overall secondary operations
such as; decorating, printing, bonding or plating especially important
to automotive and truck makers interested in texturaled panels.
For best results Axel recommends one to ten parts per 1000 resin
should be added available in 100% active powder or pellet form.
This internal release can also be easily dry tumbled, gravitationallyfed
or compounded directly into the resin to make a masterbatch.Axel
manufactures hundreds of process-specific external release agents
and internal lubricants for thermosets, thermoplastics and elastomers.

INT-34DLC
MoldWiz from Axel: New Additive Reduces Cycle Time, Proven In Customer
Tests For Molded Housewares.
In a series of injection molding tests with INT-34DLC internal mold
release from Axel Plastics Research Laboratories, Inc., Woodside,
NY USA significant productivity gains were realized for this UK
housewares manufacturer of tea kettles. From the normal cycle time
of 87 seconds the MoldWiz INT-34DLC reduced cycle time to 57 seconds
and enabled an 8% drop in the cooling temperature to achieve good
dimensional stability and an excellent appearance for all the tea
kettle parts molded. The molded pigmented polypropylene housing
contains a clear polypropylene insert. The molded tea kettle body
and cap require a tight secure closure without difficulty to open.
These qualities were achieved with the INT-34DLC MoldWiz. Glenn
Pfister, Axel Senior Technical representative states "Improved performance
for the widest variety of end-products molded from a host of polymer
resins, masterbatches and various blends is what our technical support
focuses on." Often times we must develop a specially engineered
additive such as INT-34DLC to reach our goal of producing a more
cost-efficient end product." back
